Sync your Obsidian vault across your computer, phone and tablet in real time, through a server you own instead of a subscription.
This kit turns your PocketCorp into a Self-hosted LiveSync server, the sync backend of the popular free Obsidian plugin. It sets up everything on the server by itself, then walks you through three short screens:
1. Install the free Self-hosted LiveSync plugin in Obsidian (links included).
2. Pick the folder on your server that holds your vault, or create one, in a built-in folder browser.
3. Scan a QR code with your phone. Obsidian opens with every setting filled in, real-time sync switched on, and asks for a short passphrase. On a computer, one click does the same.
What you get
- A CouchDB sync database on your server, configured the way the LiveSync project documents it, reachable over HTTPS at your server's own address
- End-to-end encryption: notes are encrypted on your devices with a passphrase generated for you, and paths are obfuscated
- A real copy of the vault on the server: the folder you pick is kept in step with your devices as plain Markdown files, so it is backed up with your server and readable by your agent and your other tools
- Setup progress on screen while it installs, with the error and a Retry button if anything fails
- A detailed guide behind the ? on the last screen, including the settings for entering them by hand
Works with Obsidian on Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android. Needs Docker, which every PocketCorp has. The first setup downloads CouchDB and builds the sync bridge, a few minutes. Installing asks for one sudo approval on your dashboard, for the setup page's background service; turn on auto-approval first for a hands-free install.
Uninstalling stops the sync server and removes the kit; your vault folder is never touched, and the sync database is kept so a reinstall picks up where it left off.
